What are braces?

Metal braces (train tracks) are a traditional orthodontic solution made up of brackets, arch wires, and elastic bands. Metal braces use high-grade stainless steel to ensure durability and strength during the braces treatment. By slowly adjusting and tightening the wires on a regular basis the dentist can move your teeth with precision into the desired position resulting in a highly predictable outcome, and a perfect smile for life.

How much are braces? Type of braces & braces prices

  1. Everyone qualifies – from mild to complex cases.
  2. Metal wires are strongest for teeth straightening.
  3. There are no limits with fixed braces.
  4. Individual teeth can be moved at the right time for the right results.
  5. Fixed braces are ALWAYS quickest – If the same patient got fixed braces or clear aligners, fixed braces would be quickest. There is a myth that clear aligners are quicker – this is because clear aligners are slightly limited and can only treat mild to medium shorter term cases.
  6. Fixed braces always take you to a perfect result.
  7. Many patients move from online clear aligners to fixed braces for a superior desired result

Braces treatment: what to expect

Initially, you’ll attend for a FREE consultation with our dentist / orthodontist. This visit involves examining your teeth and discussing treatment options and suitability. Step 2 is taking orthodontic records from which our dentist can create a treatment plan. Once the plan is agreed, the braces are placed on your teeth. Expect to visit our dentist / orthodontist regularly for adjustments. These appointments, usually every five or six weeks, are crucial for monitoring progress and making necessary tweaks.

STEP 1.
Free Consultation (30 min appoint)
– We need to assess suitability, difficulty and approx duration.

STEP 2.
Orthodontic Records (30 min appoint)
– Teeth impressions and panoramic x-rays are taken. Treatment plan created.

STEP 3.
Bond Braces (60 min appoint)
– If you are happy with your treatment plan you can schedule to start.

Metal braces vs clear braces

There are normal metal braces, transparent metal braces (ceramic braces) and clear aligners (Invisalign). Each type of braces treatment has its own unique features and advantages that cater to different needs and preferences.

  • Visibility is a primary difference. Metal braces are more noticeable because of their silver brackets. In contrast, clear braces use tooth-coloured or transparent materials, offering a discreet appearance.
  • Cost is another factor – metal braces are more affordable, making them accessible for more families and adults. Clear braces often come with a higher price tag as they are more expensive to produce.
  • Metal braces work for everyone, no matter how misaligned your teeth are, so they can treat very complex cases. Metal braces are most likely to get best results. Generally clear braces are limited to treating mild to moderate cases.

Why do I need a consultation & x-rays?

During your FREE consultation, we assess your bite and jaw alignment. If you choose to proceed, we take panoramic X-rays to detect any hidden issues beneath the gum line — such as impacted wisdom teeth — that could affect your bite, jaw, facial structure, nose, and sinuses.

Tooth movement impacts more than just your teeth — it affects your entire facial harmony. Always consult a dentist before starting braces.

Braces FAQ’s

We always start with a FREE in surgery consultation. There is no obligation to continue. Our free consultation allows us to assess your bite and jaw to ensure safe tooth movement prior to starting. We also discuss the braces options that would be most suitable for your particular case, approx length of treatment required and treatment plan.

There are a number of dangers that can result from simply starting braces without an initial assessment. Not only do braces move your teeth, they affect your facial structure, bite, jaw positioning, nose, and sinuses. You must come for an initial consultation so our dentists can determine the right path for your treatment.

At White Smile Dental our braces prices range from €2,499 to €4,399. Our braces prices are the best value on the market in Ireland. We do our best to offer amazing prices. Prices across Ireland can top €5,500 in other clinics.

What Affects the Cost

  • Number of arches (upper only vs upper + lower)
  • Severity of misalignment (mild cases are cheaper; complex cases cost more)
  • Type of braces/brackets (metal vs ceramic vs clear aligners)
  • The duration of treatment (longer treatment usually costs more)
  • Additional costs like retainers, scans, X-rays, follow-ups

Our braces prices for top teeth only start at €1,999 for metal braces.

To make braces more affordable we offer two pay monthly options.

1) Humm Finance (Flexi Fi) – third party finance provider. You can finance all or some of the treatment cost.
No deposit is required and you can pay monthly for up to 36 months. Click here to get a finance quote now.

Example – €3899 borrowed with HUMM Finance over 36 months = €123 per month.

2) Pay White Smile Dental directly – we do require a deposit on starting braces.
We require a €500 deposit on attaching bottom braces and €500 deposit on attaching top braces. The remaining treatment cost can be spread out over the length of your treatment on a monthly basis.

Example – Total treatment cost €3,899. Pay €500 when attach top, pay €500 when attach the bottom. Total paid €1,000. Remainder €2,899 can be paid at each visit over length of treatment. If it’s a 18 month treatment then it would be €161 per month.

3) If you pay in full at start of your treatment – we offer a further 10% discount.

***Remember, further savings are available by claiming 20% of your treatment cost back against your income tax bill.

For fixed metal braces it’s a visit every 6 to 8 weeks (depending on the complexity of your case) so we can perform the necessary tightening and adjustments of the metal wires. This allows us to move your teeth in the most accurate and comfortable way to achieve your desired results.

Getting braces isn’t painful, but you may feel some temporary discomfort when they’re first fitted or after adjustments. This is because the braces are gently applying pressure to move your teeth into a new position. Most patients describe it as a feeling of tightness rather than pain, and it usually eases within 24 hours. Eating softer foods can help during this short adjustment period. Once your mouth adapts, wearing braces becomes much more comfortable.
Braces are put on in a simple and painless procedure carried. First, your teeth are cleaned and dried to prepare the surface. A special adhesive is then applied to each tooth, and the small brackets are carefully fixed in place. Once all brackets are positioned, a thin wire is threaded through them and secured with tiny elastic bands. The whole process usually takes about one hour, and you can return to normal activities straight after the appointment.
Braces move teeth by applying gentle, continuous pressure over time. The brackets are fixed to each tooth and connected by a thin wire, which is regularly adjusted to guide your teeth into better alignment. This steady pressure causes the bone around the teeth to slowly reshape, allowing the teeth to shift into their new positions. It’s a gradual process designed to be safe and controlled, with adjustments made by our orthodontists to ensure the best results.
Ceramic braces work in the same way as traditional metal braces, but they use clear or tooth-coloured brackets that blend in with your teeth. These brackets are attached to each tooth and connected by a wire, which is gently tightened over time to guide your teeth into the correct position. Because they’re less noticeable than metal braces, ceramic braces are a popular choice for adults and teenagers who want effective orthodontic treatment with a more discreet appearance.
The length of time you’ll need to wear braces depends on your individual case. For some patients with mild crowding or spacing, treatment can take as little as 12 months, while more complex issues may require 18–24 months or occasionally longer. Our orthodontist will give you a personalised estimate at the start of treatment and adjust the plan as your teeth move. Wearing retainers after your braces come off is also essential to keep your teeth in their new positions.
Yes — braces are a reliable solution for correcting an overbite. They work by gradually shifting the teeth and jaw into better alignment, helping to reduce the excess overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower teeth.

Treatment often involves brackets, wires, and sometimes elastics, which apply gentle pressure to guide the bite into its correct position. For mild to moderate cases, this can be done with traditional metal braces, tooth-coloured ceramic braces, or even Invisalign clear aligners. More complex overbites may require braces combined with additional orthodontic appliances to achieve the best long-term results.

Braces themselves don’t stain your teeth, but they can make it easier for stains to develop if good oral hygiene isn’t maintained. Food and plaque can build up around the brackets and wires, which may leave marks or uneven colouring once the braces are removed. To prevent this, it’s important to brush thoroughly after meals, floss daily, and visit your dentist or hygienist for regular cleanings. With proper care, your teeth will stay unstained throughout your treatment.

When you have braces, the best toothbrush is one that helps you clean thoroughly around brackets, wires, and tight spaces. A soft-bristle brush designed specifically for orthodontic care works well. Look for:

An orthodontic or “special care” head with smaller or V-shaped bristle clusters so you can reach into tight spots near wires and brackets.

  • Soft, rounded bristles to avoid damaging the wires or irritating the gums.
  • If possible, a compact or travel size brush so you can clean after meals when you’re out.

Optional: an electric toothbrush with an orthodontic head, which can help when brushing is harder because of hardware.

Using the right kind of brush, brushing after every meal, and taking extra care around the brackets will keep your teeth clean.

Yes, you can drink coffee with braces. It is prudent to ensure you maintain regular tooth cleaning appointments with your dentist throughout your braces treatment to ensure staining is minimised.

Yes, you can eat crisps with braces.  Ensure you maintain regular tooth cleaning appointments with your dentist throughout your braces treatment.

Yes, it’s absolutely possible to get braces again. If you have had a previous braces treatment and you didn’t use your retainers correctly or weren’t fully happy with it you can redo the treatment. Many adults and even some teenagers choose a second round of orthodontic treatment if their teeth have shifted after their first braces, especially if retainers weren’t worn consistently. Advances in modern orthodontics also mean today’s braces and clear aligners are often more discreet and comfortable than in the past. Our dentist and orthodontist will assess your current bite and alignment to recommend whether traditional braces, clear braces, or Invisalign would be the most effective option for your situation.
Having your braces removed is generally quick and not painful. Your orthodontist simply loosens and removes the brackets and wires, which may create a little pressure but shouldn’t cause discomfort. Afterward, your teeth might feel slightly sensitive as they adjust to being free of braces, but this usually settles quickly. Most patients find the experience easy — and exciting — as they finally get to see their new smile.
