What is a dental cavity?

A dental cavity is a small hole that develops in a tooth when the outer enamel is weakened by decay. It starts when bacteria in the mouth produce acids from leftover food and sugars, gradually breaking down the protective surface. If not treated, the cavity can grow deeper, reaching the softer layers of the tooth and eventually causing pain or infection.

Regular dental check-ups, daily brushing and flossing, and reducing sugary foods and drinks are the best ways to avoid cavities. When one does form, your dentist can restore the tooth with a filling to stop the damage from spreading.

What is a tooth filling?

A filling is a dental treatment used to repair a tooth that has been damaged by decay or minor fractures. When part of a tooth is weakened by a cavity, our dentist removes the decayed material and replaces it with a special filling material to restore the tooth’s strength, shape, and function.

We us a tooth-coloured composite resin, which blends naturally with your smile, or more durable options like amalgam or ceramic. A filling not only restores the tooth but also helps prevent the decay from spreading further.

Types of tooth fillings?

There are different types of dental fillings, each with their own advantages. The two most common are:

  • Composite fillings (white).
  • Amalgam fillings (silver).

Composite fillings are made from a tooth-coloured resin that blends naturally with your smile, making them ideal for front teeth or visible areas. They also bond directly to the tooth, helping to preserve more of the natural structure. Amalgam fillings, on the other hand, are made from a blend of metals, including silver, and are valued for their durability and strength, especially for back teeth that handle heavy chewing. While amalgam fillings are less aesthetic, they tend to last longer, whereas composite fillings offer a more natural look but may need replacing sooner.

Tooth Filling FAQ’s

You may need a filling if part of your tooth has been damaged by decay, wear, or minor fractures. Fillings restore the strength and shape of the tooth, stop bacteria from spreading deeper, and protect against pain or infection. Common reasons for needing a filling include cavities, chipped teeth, or replacing old fillings that have worn down. By repairing the tooth early with a filling, you can avoid more complex treatments such as root canal or crowns later on.

A composite filling is a tooth-coloured material used to repair cavities or small areas of damage in a tooth. Made from a blend of resin and fine glass particles, composite fillings are designed to match the natural shade of your teeth, making them a more discreet alternative to silver amalgam fillings.

They bond directly to the tooth surface, which helps strengthen the remaining structure and reduces the amount of natural tooth that needs to be removed. Composite fillings are ideal for visible areas like front teeth, but they can also be used on back teeth for a natural look and reliable durability.

An amalgam filling is a type of dental restoration made from a mixture of metals, including silver, tin, copper, and a small amount of mercury. This combination creates a strong and durable material that has been used in dentistry for more than a century.

Amalgam fillings are particularly effective for repairing cavities in the back teeth, where chewing forces are strongest. While they don’t match the natural colour of teeth, they are known for being long-lasting and cost-effective. Today, many patients prefer tooth-coloured alternatives like composite fillings for aesthetic reasons, but amalgam is still considered a safe and reliable option.

Most dental fillings can be completed in as little as 20 to 40 minutes. The exact time depends on the size and location of the cavity, as well as the type of filling material used. Small, straightforward fillings are often very quick, while larger or multiple fillings may take longer. If our dentist needs to numb the area with local anaesthetic, a few extra minutes are added for the anaesthetic to take effect. In general, a filling is a simple and efficient procedure that can usually be done in a single visit.
You can usually eat straight away after a composite (white) filling, but it’s best to wait about 2 hours after an amalgam (silver) filling, as it takes longer to set.
Fillings typically last 5 to 15 years, depending on the material used, the size of the filling, and how well you care for your teeth.
